Drama season at MAST
There’s a whole host of drama coming up at MAST Mayflower Studios over the next few months, from Robert Louis Stevenson classics and gothic horror to the power ballads of Little Voice and a new comedy from the writer of Calendar Girls.
English Touring Theatre bring their powerful new production of Tennessee Williams’ blistering family drama CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF to Southampton from 26 – 30 October. On a sweltering Mississippi night, the Pollitt family meet for Big Daddy’s 65th birthday. But soon the claws are out and shattering truths threaten to spiral out of control as the family set out to protect themselves, and each other, from falling apart. The cast includes Peter Forbes, whose recent stage appearances include Follies at the National Theatre, as Big Daddy and Teresa Banham, who appeared last year in Barney Norris’ Blood Wedding at Salisbury Playhouse, as his wife. The production is directed by Anthony Almeida, winner of the 2019 Sir Peter Hall Director Award.
Looking ahead, actor James Gaddas, from TV’s Bad Girls and Coronation Street, performs his own fascinating take on DRACULA on 1 and 2 March 2022. He tells how, while working on a television show, he discovered Bram Stoker’s handwritten copy of the story with unpublished pages and how he began a journey of discovery to Transylvania and beyond. In this haunting stage show Gaddas brings the original to life before sharing his chilling discovery behind the legend.
SHEILA’S ISLAND, from 15 – 19 March 2022, is a sharp new comedy from Tim Firth, the writer of Calendar Girls. At an outward bound team-building weekend, marketing manager Sheila has unwittingly stranded her team on an island in the Lake District. As mobile batteries die and hunger takes over, will endless verses of Kumbaya really keep spirits up? There are laughs aplenty and revelations galore from a cast that includes Sara Crowe (Four Weddings And A Funeral), Judy Flynn (The Brittas Empire) and Abigail Thaw (Endeavour).
